For someone who is a bit of a nerd when it comes to eco-conscious gardening - particularly composting and water butts. Expect questions like; What food can I put in my compost bin? What’s that smell? Won’t it attract mice and rats? Can I put everything I eat in my compost bin? Can I use garden worms for a wormery? Can I make my own water butt? Does it need to have a tap?
You will:
teach how to get the right balance of ‘browns and greens’, when to turn and water your heap and when it’s ready to use in your garden and where.
be able to share different types of composting solutions (indoor/outdoor, hot/cold, batch/continuous). If you have a wormery to bring and show, we’d love that!
lead a group build for a DIY compost bin using scrap materials and discuss the pros and cons of DIY versus ready-made compost bins. We want to focus on re-using materials, we have some wood/palettes on site.
share information on why everyone should have a water butt (collect that precious water)! We have examples of water collection around the allotment, but it would be great to be able to share cost-effective examples of how easy it is for anyone can have a rain-water collection point in their own garden/balcony/outdoor space.
We will create a WhatsApp group to share resources and tutorials.
Everyone will be asked to assess their environmental and waste impact.
