Come along to our Future of Food sessions this summer and explore all things food in virtual reality. Learn new skills to create your own virtual and augmented worlds and have a go at growing some fruit and veg (in real life)! Part of our day will be spent outdoors so please dress to suit the weather (sun cream, hats etc). Equipment, tasty lunches and snacks will be provided.
This camp is suitable for young people living in Barnsley aged 11 – 16 who are eligible for free school meals
On day one you will be using our tablets to explore different foodscapes in virtual reality (a foodscape is like a landscape – a beach or mountain range, but includes the people that live there and the food they eat!). You’ll be inspired by people from all backgrounds, who grow their own food on balconies, windowsills and even street verges. By the end of the first day, you’ll have a go at starting to design your own future farm!
On day two you’ll have a go at planting your own window box of herbs. You’ll find out more about community food growing in and around Barnsley and you’ll start tinkering with Cospaces Edu, an online platform where you’ll use basic coding to create your own virtual realities.
On day three you’ll use what you have learned to make your future farm come to life in virtual reality! Throughout the day, you’ll get regular support from facilitators and your peers and we’ll spend the second half of the session exploring each others worlds.
You will get a delicious healthy lunch everyday. Also, you will learn how to cook a tasty meal once a week! As well as you will get a hour of physical activity daily for example, team games and outdoor activities.
Booking is completed on the Barnsley Council website. To attend this workshop, you must book all three dates. We’ve provided links to each of the three days here:
You’re in good hands. All our camp leaders are first aid trained and DBS checked. We have a thorough Safeguarding policy in place with processes to prevent and report any incidents.

Hi, I’m Eva and I am passionate about making the world a greener and fairer place. I think this starts with what’s on our plates. When we are involved in the process of growing our own food and being able to buy it locally we support our mental and physical health, as well as the planet. Come along to the Future of Food holiday camp to learn more!
Each day you’ll meet your camp leaders in the reception at DMC 01. You’ll get to explore the new MakerLab across the street. For our physical activity, we’ll walk to the HOPE in the Community Allotment where we’ll learn about growing our own food.
The Healthy Holidays clubs run from Monday 25 July to Friday 26 August, with a range of fantastic clubs taking place across Barnsley boroughs through the summer.
Each club includes a range of fun activities for children to enjoy, such as cookery, arts and crafts, gymnastics, team sports, outdoor activities and much more. A delicious healthy meal is also provided.
Children who receive benefit-related free school meals are entitled to a free place at all the Healthy Holiday clubs, and can book to attend a club every day they’re running (subject to availability).
